Sussex Central HS graduate selected for Gates Scholarship

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Sussex Central High School graduate William Garcia-Garcia is one of 300 high school students from across the United States to be selected as a national Gates Scholarship recipient this year.

“It’s a relief for my family because I know that coming from a Latin American family we don’t have many resources especially financially, so the ability to go to college on a full ride is something incredible,” said William.

William said his family faced a lot of violence in Guatemala. He said their situation inspires him to push for a better future.

“They had to go through massive challenges that inspired me as I grew up and the ability to go visit Guatemala and see for myself how they lived was really inspiring and that was another source of motivation for me,” said William.

William said he grew up watching his dad work hard in construction to make ends meet.

His dad William Garcia tells 47ABC, he is proud of his son.

“I’m very proud and grateful for the institutions and the government in this country, which has given him the opportunity, given us the opportunity to continue to pursue our dreams in this country,” said Garcia.

William said he is now looking to study economics at the University of Chicago.

He said he hopes to inspire Latinos to fight for their dreams and start a company with his dad.
