Special Olympics torch makes run through Worcester County

WORCESTER CO., Md. –  The annual law enforcement torch run kicked off Monday in Ocean City and made its way through Worcester County.

Law enforcement officers from across Worcester County were on the run escorting and protecting the Flame of Hope to benefit Special Olympics Maryland.

The Flame started off on the Ocean City boardwalk, and made its way to West Ocean City, Ocean City Elementary, Berlin Intermediate School and finally to downtown Berlin.

The money raised from today’s event will help provide Special Olympics athletes with opportunities to compete.

“It’s awesome for the community to come together and run this event. You don’t have to run, you can be a biker, walker, but it’s just awesome. All the kids come together from the schools, bystanders from the community are out cheering us on and it’s just an awesome feeling,” said PFC Neshawn Jubilee of the Ocean City Police Department.

We’re told this year’s event has raised $15,000 for Special Olympics.

This run is part of a larger statewide effort. The four flames will converge in Towson where the torch will light the cauldron, officially declaring the 2019 Summer Games open.
