Officials Warn to Not Leave Car Unattended in Heat

MILLSBORO, De. – As temperatures heat up in our area, parents all over are hearing about the dangers of leaving their children in hot cars.

But officials are now warning parents of another danger: leaving your car unlocked and open for your child to climb inside of.

Officials say kids can wander into parked cars while playing, and end up getting stuck in there without knowing how to get out.

But the Millsboro Police Department tells 47 ABC there are simple steps all parents can take to make sure their kids don’t get stuck in an empty car.

“It’s best to keep your car locked if you’re not using it, keep your keys somewhere where the kids can’t get to it, keep them somewhere high where the kids can’t find them,” Sgt. Patrick Forester, with the Millsboro Police Department, said.

Officials add that parents should never leave their kids alone in the car, even if only for a few minutes.
