Murder trial underway after Salisbury homicide
SALISBURY, Md. – In Wicomico County, a murder trial is now underway after 29-year-old Shawn Johnson was shot to death back in 2018. Now the man accused of the murder, Jonathan MeGee, will soon learn his fate as the jury takes the next couple of days to decide if he’s guilty or not guilty. Once the jury was finally picked Wednesday morning, the state and defense went right to work, starting off with opening arguments. Up first was the state, who claims the evidence they have puts MeGee at the center of the shooting that happened on July 6th. They allege MeGee had gotten into a fight with Johnson that day, and have MeGee’s DNA that was recovered from under Johnson’s fingernails. They also say multiple witnesses also saw MeGee running from where the shooting occurred with a gun in his hand. The state also arged that after the shooting, MeGee was with his girlfriend and told her “I may have murdered someone, but they don’t have enough to put me there.” Meanwhile, the defense had one simple argument. The state has the wrong guy. They argue that other witnesses identified the shooter as a black guy with dreads, and clearly his defendant, didn’t fit that description. After opening arguments took place a number of witnesses were called to the stand. Detailing what they saw or heard during the shooting, in an attempt to give the jury every bit of information needed to help them reach a verdict.
The trial is expected to reconvene Thursday morning.
