Maryland State Police hold 20th Annual Eric Monk Softball Tournament

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – People got together in Princess Anne on Sunday to honor the life and legacy of Eric Monk, a Maryland State Trooper who was killed in the line of duty 30 years ago.

Monk was hit and killed by a car in Somerset County after he had stopped someone on the road.

For 20 years now, Maryland State Police have been hosting a softball tournament in Monk’s name to support his legacy.

The annual tournament raises $2,000 dollars in scholarship money for two Somerset County high school students.

State Trooper Jordan Monk says the annual event is a chance to honor his uncle who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“It means so much to my family because we’re honoring my uncle who passed away and it gives a chance for the community to come together raise money for the community, for the future students of Somerset County that are going off to college,” said Jordan.

The softball tournament is held every year at the Somerset Ruritan Field.

State Police encourage the community to come out in support of both Somerset County students and in support of Monk’s legacy.
