Early morning crash involving drunk driver claims the life of one in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. – Ocean City Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened in Ocean City early Friday morning.

According to police, the crash happened at around 1:15 a.m. in the area of 46th Street. Preliminary investigation revealed that police attempted to stop the suspect vehicle in the area of 59th Street and Coastal Highway after receiving a report of a drunk driver. The driver failed to stop, and eventually officers lost sight of the vehicle.

A few moments later, the driver, identified as 41-year-old Todd Pivec, struck another vehicle traveling southbound. The vehicle that was struck then caught fire as a result of the accident, and the driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Pivec then reportedly struck a telephone pole and attempted to flee on foot, but was immediately taken into custody.

The crash remains under investigation and charges for Pivec are pending. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
