City expected to triple number of bike lanes this summer
SALISBURY, Md. – Riding a bike in Salisbury could soon become a lot easier in many parts of the city.
At a work session Monday, council members discussed constructing bicycle facilities and lanes across the city.
If approved by council, the city would at least triple the amount of bike lanes by the end of the summer.
Streets that could see new bike lanes include Carroll Street, South Park Drive, North Park Drive, Northwood Drive and more.
We’re told much of the city’s street layouts are obsolete, and this work would bring the infrastructure into the 21st century while supplying more safety for local bike riders.
“It’ll be a huge improvement because they’ll have their own dedicated space now. Most of our streets were designed during the 60s, they’re way too wide,” said transportation project specialist Will White. “You trade that width for a lot more safety for the bicyclists, because they’re going to lose any battle with a car.”
We’re told it will take about five to ten years to implement the city’s full 2017 bike master plan.
