Wicomico County to “Go Purple” in September

WICOMICO Co., Md. – It’s official, Wicomico County will be going purple this September.

The Wicomico County Opioid Intervention Team, the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore are working together to create this initiative called Wicomico Goes Purple.

We are still experiencing an opioid epidemic in Maryland, in fact in 2017 alone, 35 people in Wicomico County died from an overdose.

Project leaders hope their program will promote conversations and direct people to treatment so that they can recover.

By ‘going purple,’ it signifies that you are willing to take a stand against substance abuse, so everyone in the county is encouraged to take part.

Stephanie Willey, the Chair of Wicomico Goes Purple said, “We’re encouraging all the businesses in the community to get behind this initiative and encourage their employees to become educated about awareness. It’s very important to know about the dangers of addiction and then they can refer people to treatment programs. So it’s about awareness, treatment, recovery, prevention, that’s all together.”

The initiative officially kicks off at the Shorebirds Stadium on August 31st, which is Overdose Awareness Day.
