Town encourages visitors to be ready for coastal emergencies
BETHANY BEACH, Del. – We’re inching closer to the start of Hurricane season, and with that in mind, the town of Bethany Beach thought this weekend would be a perfect time to educate visitors about what to do during a coastal emergency. It’s all part of the annual Poseidon Festival.
At the four-day long event, people are getting tips on how to stay safe in a hurricane or nor’easter.
And people are learning how to stay safe while body surfing on the water. The town wants to educate visitors about what to do in case of an emergency, but also wants to keep things light, with activities such as having pirates walking the planks of its boardwalk.
“Poseidon was the Greek god who was friends with the sailors. But when he was angry he created chaos. So, the chaos piece is the emergency, how to handle the hurricanes and the storms, what to do. And then the friendly sailor piece is let’s make this fun, island inspired,” said Bethany Beach events coordinator Julie Malewski.
This four-day event will continue through Monday at the town’s grandstand.
