Man dies after boat capsizes on Rehoboth Bay

SUSSEX Co., Del. – One person is dead after a boat capsized on the Rehoboth Bay Sunday afternoon.

According to DNREC’s Fish and Wildlife Natural Resources Police, the boat capsized at around 3:45 p.m. near the Rehoboth Beach Yacht and Country Club.

The NRP says there were two people on board the small, 16 foot fiberglass vessel when it capsized. The boat likely capsized due to weather, water conditions and the wake caused by other passing vessels.

The operator of the boat was able to stay afloat using life jackets and flag down a passing boater for help while holding onto his passenger. According to the NRP, the passenger had a prior medical condition which caused his body to go into distress when he entered the water.

The passenger was declared dead when first responders arrived on scene.

The NRP says the operator of the boat is in stable condition.

The investigation into this accident is ongoing.
