Locals react to delayed $20 bill featuring Harriet Tubman
47 ABC – Maryland’s U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen and others are speaking about the delay to put local legend and abolitionist leader Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill.
Sen. Van Hollen releasing a statement about it saying, “Harriet Tubman was tireless in her pursuit of freedom and the promotion of human rights, and she represents the best of Maryland and our country. For years, I’ve been pushing Secretary Mnuchin to move forward with putting Harriet Tubman on the $20—but he refused to make a commitment. The fact that he has further delayed a decision may not be a surprise but it is no less shameful.”
Locals we also spoke to were also not pleased with the move.
“It’s a tragedy it really is because that’s our collective answer to no we will wait we’re not ready and that’s not accurate, that’s not accurate at all. We need this, we need it badly and she should be honored,” explains Elaine Malcolm.
Secretary Mnuchin backed up his reasoning to push the move back by saying there is more important U.S. currency that needs to be redesigned before the $20 bill.
