Local American Legion Post celebrates Memorial Day

SALISBURY, Md. – This Memorial Day weekend people from across Delmarva got together to honor and remember the people who died while serving our country.

In Salisbury, veterans and their families as well as county officials gathered outside the American Legion Wicomico Post 64 to take a moment to pray for our military and honor our country.

Korean War veterans as well as veterans who served in Afghanistan were recognized at the ceremony.

One of the event organizers said it is important to understand the real meaning behind the national holiday.

“We honor those who have served so that we can be free to do what we want to, and it’s not a day for barbecues and parties,” said Barbara Wharton, the commander for the American Legion Wicomico Post 64 in Salisbury.

“It’s a day to be solemn and remember the men and women who died,” said Wharton.

Dozens of flags were handed out during the ceremony as people said their prayers for our military.
