Gov. Hogan, Mayor Meehan recreate summer kick off tradition
OCEAN CITY, Md. – People in Ocean City on Friday celebrated the start of the summer with the planting of the first umbrella of the season. It is an event Governor Larry Hogan said he is glad to help bring back to the resort town more than 70 years since its inception.
“It was the mayor’s idea and he invited me to come to be a part of it,” said Governor Larry Hogan.
“I thought it was kind of cool and I love Ocean City and I’ve been here every summer of my life,” said Hogan.
Hogan said the photo and the event represented the end of a long struggle and the hope for a brighter future.
“When they did it 73 years ago it was a really tough time economically and they were trying to get people to come down and support the town and now I think we’re doing pretty well,” said Hogan, “And, I think it’s going to be a great summer.”
“I think it’s pretty cool,” said Nancy Webb.
“I think they should have worn the bathing suits that they wore back then to make it more authentic, but I think it’s a great idea,” said Webb.
Many like Nancy Webb said they are just grateful the Governor supports Ocean City.
“I know he’s a big supporter of Ocean City, and I appreciate that and anything that keeps Ocean City vibrant and changing, but still being there and creating memories for new families is a wonderful thing that we want to support,” said Webb.
Mayor Rick Meehan said 100 umbrellas were planted at the beaches to celebrate the beginning of the 100 days of the summer season.
Both the governor and mayor said they hope to bring this unique ceremony to the resort town in the years to come.
