Fire crews battle venting propane tanks and firing ammunition in Harrington blaze

HARRINGTON, Del. – On Tuesday, firefighters faced quite the challenge in Harrington as they battled venting propane tanks and firing ammunition while containing a storage building blaze.

Most of the building, located on the 2000 block of Ingram Branch Road, collapsed as a result of the fire.

We’re told the fire started around 10:00 a.m., and it took about an hour to contain.

The heat of the fire is what caused ammunition to fire off and the propane tanks to vent.

Six fire companies responded to the scene.

While the conditions of this fire were certainly scary, the Harrington Fire Company says they felt well equipped to handle it.

Dep. Chief Kenny Brode with the Harrington Fire Co. said, “We’ve had a few like this over the years, so it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. Like anything else, you don’t want to see it, but we’ve seen similar fires like this in the past.”

He continued to say, “What we try to do is obviously to keep it cool, keep it from venting, if we can shut the propane source off we will try to do that but the main concern is if it explodes.”

Luckily, no one was injured in this fire.

State fire investigators are searching for the fire’s origin and cause.
