Event venue opening at Fort Miles WWII Bunker

LEWES, Del. – Imagine having your wedding at a World War II bunker overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. That’s one of the Fort Miles Historical Association’s goals with its latest projects at Cape Henlopen State Park.

The association is currently in phase two, out of four, for its plans to increase accessibility at Fort Miles. During the first phase, they installed what they call the “big gun” inside the bunker. The second phase involves creating restrooms and a mess hall as well as building a parking lot and a venue that has almost 8-thousand-square feet of rental space. Moving forward, the association hopes to generate money by renting the space out for events.

“What is intended in this phase is to really put the infrastructure together, to create revenue streams to support this museum in the years ahead. The idea of this is to do park programming here, do summer concerts here, a whole series of different events that we can rent this for like business meetings, for weddings,” says Mark Chura, project manager at Fort Miles.

The current phase of construction should be complete by the end of summer 2019 and we’re told the first wedding at the venue is in early June of 2019.
