DART unveils new Lewes Visitor Center in time for summer season

LEWES, Del. – DART unveiled its new transit center in Lewes on Monday just in time for the start of this year’s tourist season, which begins this weekend.

People using the buses in Lewes will be happy to see a new building with air conditioning, bathrooms, ticket sales and TV’s with real time bus information. It’s a transit hub that sees about 3,500 people on any given Saturday in August. Officials tell 47 ABC it’s all part of their efforts to make public transportation more convenient and reliable, in an area that sees a lot of beach traffic in the summer.

“The great thing about this location, being in the north part of the beach area, is that you can park here. Get out of the congestion, get on the bus. There’s a bus only lane so literally if you’re on the bus you’re passing by cars sitting in traffic. It’s a really quick and easy way to get to the beach,” says Julie Theyerl, the Chief Customer Experience Officer for Delaware Transit Corporation.

In addition to this new building, DART is reminding riders to use their app which allows you to pay right on your phone. DART is also building a new maintenance facility in Lewes so that buses no longer have to be repaired in Georgetown. Two electric buses will also soon be added to the fleet.
