Town of Snow Hill prepares for upcoming government election

SNOW HILL, Md. – As Snow Hill residents continue to envision a brighter future for the town, they’re looking for a strong group of leaders to help make that dream become a reality. And on May 7th the candidates for mayor and council are hoping they fit that vision as residents cast their vote.

“There’s been one common factor that we’ve really seen the town continue to decline,” said Central District council candidate Melisa Weidner.

This year, all eyes are on the mayoral race, after the previous mayor resigned in October. During Monday’s night forum both candidates lined out their ideal plan to help revitalize the area.

“Hopefully we can build some new housing we haven’t really done that on a large scale for decades and I’m pretty sure we’d fill them up pretty quickly,” said mayoral candidate Gary Weber.

“The town hall and the town will spend the rest of this year trying to put themselves in a position of being able to acquire block grants so that we can actually be able to begin some significant work on some infrastructure systems in town,” said mayoral candidate Richard Thompson.

Two council positions are also up for grabs. Central District incumbent Jenny Hall promises more growth, while her challenger hopes to bridge the communication gap between the town and residents.

“We definitely need more transparency in the administration and people feel comfortable with approaching town hall with issues,” said Weidner.

Western District incumbent LaToya Purnell did not show for Monday’s candidate forum, but her challenger came prepared to address concerns.

“I think affordable housing is the number one issue there so I think that would help a lot of people out with families being able to move,” said Western District council candidate Mark Nixon.

And despite being opponents, everyone has the same goal in mind: To make sure the town continues to thrive.

“I think between all of us we can make something work and get things going again in town here,” Nixon said.
