Tibetan monks return to Salisbury University

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University students welcomed some special visitors on Tuesday.

A group of monks from the region of Tibet shared a piece of their culture by preparing for a unique ritual they will be performing throughout the week.

According to the spokesperson for the Drepung Loseling Monastery, Gesse Tegin Phentsok, these monks will be constructing an elaborate sand mandala, which represents peace and understanding.

Phentsok said that the construction also celebrates Dalai Lama and brings attention to the importance of love and compassion.

“In the world it’s very obvious that we are very much lacking the sense of compassion and caring for each other, understanding one another and so we’re promoting world peace and harmony through the Tibetan culture,” said Phentsok.

Once the sand mandala is finished it will be destroyed as part of a message that nothing is permanent.
