Roads reopen in Laurel following tornado damage

LAUREL, Del. – On Tuesday, we learned that many of the roads that were closed in Laurel have since been reopened.

DelDOT says they closed off roads so that power companies and utility crews could go in and make some much needed repairs following Monday’s tornado.

They started with about a dozen closures but as of Tuesday night, everything is reopen including Seaford Road which was once listed as being closed indefinitely.

DelDOT officials say they will keep US 13 southbound down to one lane for the rest of this evening but add that it should reopen soon.

When we asked if any of the roads themselves were damaged by the tornado we were told that the roads weren’t the problem.

Alastair Probert, A DelDOT District Engineer said, “Well there was extensive structural damage to numerous homes throughout the area. We had a lot of debris on the roadway, a lot of trees down, wires in the trees, and a lot of maintenance and traffic issues where we were shutting down roads to keep people safe…We didn’t experience any damage to our roadways whatsoever, it’s more just debris and that kind of stuff.”
