Oh deer! Wild animal breaks into local church
GEORGETOWN, Del. – On Sunday, First Baptist Church in Georgetown had an unexpected visitor. A deer broke in through the front door, and it was all caught on camera.
Student Pastor Joel Pinson said, “We’re going to have a story to tell for the rest of our lives about this church.”
It was 6:39 a.m. when cameras captured a four-legged intruder crashing through the front doors of First Baptist Church.
Pastor Woody Bates said, “He was here for an hour and 20 minutes.”
In eighty minutes, the deer managed to break several windows, knock over chairs and leave behind a general mess.
Pastor Bates said, “Windows that were shattered, chairs that were knocked over, glass everywhere.”
Surveillance video shows the deer hanging out by the back doors for a while before finally making a dramatic exit at around 8 a.m.
When church goers arrived about an hour after the break in, they feared the worst.
Pinson said, “When I saw that door I thought, ‘Oh no, what got stolen? Is somebody still here?'”
Once they spotted fur on the ground, they put together what happened.
Pinson said, “As soon as we came in the back doors we actually came in first we saw there’s all this animal hair so immediately our minds ran to okay its probably a deer.”
Pastor Woody Bates tells us at the end of the day, he’s just grateful because this situation could have been worse.
Pastor Bates said, “Nobody was hurt so we’re thankful for that and it seems like the deer was okay to get out of the building and go on its way so we’re thankful.”
As for the damages, the church has got it covered.
Pinson said, “We’ve already got some companies that we know can replace glass for us, they’ve done it before in different situations so as soon as we hear from the insurance company and get things squared away on that end, we’ll go to town on getting it fixed.”
The church says they’re hoping to have all the damages repaired by Easter Sunday.
We’re told the deer likely broke into the church because it saw it’s reflection on the glass and got spooked.
As for the church, they’re staying light-hearted about the situation, saying everyone is welcome to attend their church services on Easter Sunday…they just ask that no one smash any windows or doors.
The church will be debuting it’s first ever 9 a.m. service on Easter Sunday.
