Deadline to get a REAL ID is approaching

SALISBURY, Md. – If you plan on boarding an airplane late next year, you better have an up-to-date form of identification! The deadline to upgrade your Drivers License or State ID to a “REAL ID” is October 2020. After that date, you won’t be able to get into federal facilities or even board an airplane without a REAL ID.

To get your REAL ID, you need to visit the MVA or DMV prepared with a lot of paperwork.

Shiree Gates, who was at the MVA to renew her license said, “I actually had to go back home and get my birth certificate, social security cards, and two forms of bills.”

Melissa McLeod-Seyfert, who was at the MVA to get her REAL ID added, “I’ve got everything under the sun.”

REAL ID-compliant licenses have a star in the upper right-hand corner.

People we spoke to at the MVA on Tuesday say they would rather get their REAL ID taken care of sooner rather than later, so they won’t run into problems when traveling.

McLeod-Seyfert said, “I didn’t want any nasty surprises when I got to the airport and find out hey, you can’t travel!”

By requiring people to come with more proof of identity, it will help boost security, which is something people we spoke to say they can get behind.

Gates said, “People be taking your name, social security number, so any kind of safety measure they can use, I am all for it.”

If you aren’t sure whether or not you have a REAL ID, you can click here to check.

You are encouraged to make an appointment online before going to the MVA to decrease your waiting time.

It’s important to note that this change doesn’t only apply to the State of Maryland, residents in both Delaware and Virginia have the same deadline of October 2020 if they want to be able to fly on plane.

If you need to upgrade your ID, you are encouraged to visit your MVA or DMV office sooner rather than later so you can avoid longer wait times.
