Damage reported after tornado touches down in Laurel
LAUREL, Del. – Town officials on Friday highlighted the recovery efforts underway in Laurel with another potentially devastating round of storms on the way.
According to the Mayor of Laurel John Shwed, the town potentially lost millions of dollars as a result of Monday’s tornado. The mayor said members of Sussex County Emergency Services are still gathering a damage assessment.
Shwed said that there are up to 20 buildings damaged by the tornado. He said residents have been getting some financial support from insurance companies, but it is still not enough.
“What we’re trying to do here obviously is we have expectations that insurance companies are going to do their part and then everybody’s going to do what they can to help out with the stuff that’s not being covered by insurance,” said Shwed.
The mayor said volunteers helping out homeowners affected by the tornado has been crucial especially because of limited recovery funds.
