Community out in full force for annual Hero’s Challenge Truck Pull

SALISBURY, Md. – On Saturday hundreds of people made their way to downtown Salisbury to watch 30 teams pull a 40 ton fire truck, all for a good cause.

“Today is our third annual truck pull. We started this for the past three years. We started out with 12 teams went to 18 this year we have 30 teams ready and as you can see its absolutely crazy out here,” explains SPD Det. Jason Caputo.

It’s an event that says it all in the name, a chance for the community to come together test out their strength and well pull the fire truck across the finish line.

“Once you get it moving it’s not terrible. It’s getting it moving it weighs between 70,000 and 80,000 pounds and once you get it going the inertia helps you along but you gotta pull it 50 feet,” explains Salisbury Deputy Fire Chief Jim Gladwell.

A task that isn’t too easy to complete, well at least for the celebrity team that 47 ABC’s Dani Bozzini and Julian Sadur was on. Other teams seemed to do it with ease.

But the good news is no matter how long it takes to cross that finish line, everyone leaves as a winner since all the money raised is going to the Special Olympics.

“As you can see the community is out here in full force. We love being a part of the community, we love giving back to the community and this is one of the ways we can do that,” explains Caputo.

It’s a challenge the community has welcomed with open arms.

“It’s just an amazing amazing day to support again an incredible cause,” says Joan Wharton, a participant.

Gladwell adds, “This is what we live for. Every opportunity we can get to help people that’s what we want to do.”
