Wicomico Co. Roads Division restrategizes Morris Mill Dam project

FRUITLAND, Md. – New plans are in motion to update the Morris Mill Dam road project.

If you aren’t familiar with it, the Morris Mill Dam is located on the Morris Mill Pond.

It runs underneath South Division street in Fruitland.

We’re told the dam needed work because as of right now it is a serious public safety hazard and has been closed since September.

But when workers started breaking ground on the $2 million project, the embankment required more work than they had originally planned for.

Because of this discovery, work on the dam has come to hault.

Lee Outten is the Superintendent of Roads for Wicomico County.

He said, “We began the work and during the construction what we realized is that the water was actually seeping through the dam embankment so it was a real safety concern to the men working on it and integrity of dam itself.”

We’re told the Wicomico Roads Division has returned to the drawing board and presented a new concept drawing to the Maryland Dam Safety board.

Once the board approves it, then the roads division will get back to work.

We’re told the new design also calls for less “earth-moving.”

As always 47 ABC will continue to update you with the status of this road closure as information becomes available.
