West Seaford Elementary celebrates “Rock Your Socks Day”
SEAFORD, Del. – At West Seaford Elementary everybody was suited up from head to to toe rocking the snazziest of socks, and it was all for and important cause: World Down Syndrome Day.
“Awareness, acceptance and inclusion.”
West Seaford Elementary School’s Mrs. Dana Bowe is putting her best foot forward to educate her students about the importance of inclusivity and the Golden Rule: treating others the way you would want to be treated.
To do that, she’s teaching kids about the real reason for World Down Syndrome Day which is recognizing that some of us are different, and that’s okay.
She said, “Everyone is still a person. It’s about uniqueness and celebrating each other.”
And to treat those with Down Syndrome the same kindness as you would anyone else.
As for the miss-matched socks, Mrs. Bowe said, “When you look at the chromosome you can see that they kind of look like brightly colored socks and that is where the idea of rock your socks comes from.”
We’re told Mrs. Bowe used a portion of her teacher of the year award money to purchase socks for all the students and staff within the Seaford School District so they could rock their socks at the school’s “sock hop” dance.
Principal Laura Schneider said, “Mrs. Bowe is one of the most kind and compassionate teachers and I honestly would expect nothing less from her. It’s just who she is.”
We’re told teachers, like Mrs. Bowe, consider having fun while learning to be a priority every day, not just on rocks your socks day and the smiles on their student’s faces are critical to the success of their school.
