Single vehicle crash turns fatal in Dover

DOVER, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a single vehicle crash that has claimed the life of one.

According to police, the accident happened just after 10:30 a.m. on March 7th, on northbound SR 1 north of the Exit 93 northbound ramp. A Chevrolet Malibu was traveling in the right lane and attempted to change lanes into the dedicated exit/entry lane when the driver abruptly turned to the left and back into the right travel lane. The vehicle then reportedly crossed over the left lane into a paved median, striking a concrete jersey barrier separating the north and southbound lanes.

The driver, identified as 95-year-old George Thompson of Dover, was properly restrained and responsive on scene. He was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries on Tuesday.

The accident remains under investigation.
