Police: Man arrested for shooting 16 year old in Dagsboro

DAGSBORO, Del. – In Dagsoboro, police say they have a man in custody who’s accused of shooting a 16-year-old boy last night.

Delaware State Police Say 60-year-old John Barnhard has been arrested and charged with a number of counts including assault in the first degree. On Wednesday, around 9 PM, investigators say the victim, now identified as 16-year-old Brandon Pumarejo was riding down Old Mill Road with three other people, when Barnhard had flagged them down in his pickup truck. That’s when police say the four people got out, began talking with Barnhard, when Barnhard proceeded to pull out his handgun, and fired a shot at Pumarejo shooting him in the upper torso.

Barnhard then fled on foot and was located a short time later near the scene. On Thursday 47spoke to neighbors in the area who say they’re shocked that this happened in this community.

“We locked up, turned on all of our lights on from outside, put our alarm system on and listened to the helicopters,” said one resident Susan Timmons.

“It’s a quiet quiet street, quiet neighborhood nothing like this ever goes on,” said Kelley Martin.

Now the 16-year-old was taken A.I Dupont hospital in critical condition. Barnhard is currently being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $317,000 secured bond. Police add that the incident still remains under investigation, and are asking that if anyone has any information in reference to the shooting, they are asked to contact Detective Grassi at 302-365-8441.
