New facility allows organization to offer more home-buying services

SALISBURY, Md. –  It is now a bit easier to find help if you’re a Somerset or Worcester County resident looking to become a homeowner.

Wednesday marked the ribbon cutting for Salisbury Neighborhood Housing Services new location on Riverside Drive, and because of this they are expanding their services.

With their new space, the non-profit can now offer computer courses to families looking to purchase a home, but don’t have computer access.

And now with a grant through NeighborWorks America, NHS will begin a pilot program to offer their services to Somerset and Worcester County residents by the end of the month.

“That’s one of the biggest hurdles to home-ownership, is having cash to go to closing. There are a lot of programs available where you don’t have to have a lot of down payment, but you still have to cover your closing costs. And that can be five or six percent of the purchase price. So it’s a substantial help,” said Cheryl Meadows, executive director with Salisbury NHS.

Over the past five years, this organization has helped over 250 families in becoming homeowners, and provided counseling and education to about 1,200 local families.
