Milford PD outgrow station, purchase land for new headquarters
MILFORD, Del. – More space, better security and a safer location is what the Milford Police Department is looking for in their new police station.
“This building was built in 1979 for 15 officers, today we have 37 officers that alone should tell you we’ve outgrown the building,” explains Milford Police Chief Kenneth Brown.
That’s why it’s out with the old and in with the new, something the Milford Police department desperately needs.
“Not only has our population more than doubled but the amount of space we’re patrolling has tripled.”
And their current building just isn’t making the cut, not just because of the space constrictions but safety concerns too.
“The public has total 360 access around our building, which it shouldn’t be. In fact there’s public fishing right here.”
Issues they just couldn’t deal with any longer, luckily a new police station is finally in the works.
“We’ve re-vamped just about every room in this building from its original design to try and adapt to our needs today and we’ve just run out, so we’ve purchased the property across the street.”
And the city is 100 percent on board and ready to make this concept a reality. On Friday, Milford City Manager Eric Norenberg released this statement to 47 ABC:
“Our goal is to engage the community in planning a functional and attractive headquarters that will not only meet the police department’s needs but also be accessible to Milford residents for community use.”
Chief Brown says he’s hoping to break ground on the new police station in the next year.
