Maryland lawmakers: sports betting bill on hold until 2020
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Maryland lawmakers said Thursday measures to allow sports betting in the state will not move forward this year.
Legislators announced that any future decision on sport betting in the state will have to wait until the 2020 ballot.
47ABC met up with Delegate Carl Anderton (R-District 38) who said he he hopes sports betting legalization will happen. He said the state needs additional sources of revenue in order to hey more funding for things like education resources.
“I personally think that we’ve been taxed quite enough already and so if it is more of a selective tax if you will for somebody who chooses to gamble than I am fine with that,” said Anderton, “They’re doing it in other states around us so we might as well take advantage of those full opportunities.”
Legislation to put sports betting on the ballot last year stalled after disagreements on whether to allow sports betting at casinos, racetracks or both.
