Little Free Library donated in time for Read Across America

FRUITLAND, Md. –  Saturday was Read Across America Day, an annual nationwide children’s literacy event, and this year the event took on a whole new meaning for Michelle Milad in Fruitland.

A brand new Little Free Library was delivered to Milad’s house by Coastal Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning on Friday.

Milad says she has seen kids come by and take books, and some drop them off.

The city of Fruitland removed her old library, and allegedly returned it with damage. The city has said it would pay for the restoration, but Milad claims that the only apology she has gotten was a letter in a box on her front lawn.

“I feel sad and frustrated that the city feels entitled to come on to people’s lawns and just take things. And in the end, they kind of got away with it. But the benefit is that I have a bigger and better library, and that more people are going to benefit from that,” said Milad.

Milad tells us she is in the process of figuring out where she will go from here. She says she’s still looking for a formal apology from the city, however her focus is on restoring the old free library and giving it to someone in Salisbury.
