Kent Island takes the Henlopen-Bayside matchup for their first win of the year
WYOMING, Del.- After taking a one goal lead at halftime, the Kent Island Buccaneers pulled away to defeat Caesar Rodney 8-5 for their first win on the season (1-2). The loss drops CR to 0-1 to open the season for the first time since 2011.
The Buccaneers would open up the scoring off of a Matthew Bastain hop-shot over the keepers head just 5 minutes into the game. The Riders would get the equalizer from an unexpected player, defender Myles Lawrence gets the steal and take it 60 yards himself for the goal. From there the Bucs would go on a little run behind a goal from Bryan Him and another by Ricky Tubman to end the first quarter with the 3-1 lead. As time wound down in the half the Riders got a spark from junior Sean Wooleyhand. The midfielder would net two goals to end the half including one with three second left to cut the lead to one at the break.
Second half and the Riders still looking to close the gap. After a Kent Island goal by Jordan Galloway, Wolleyhand would get the hat trick with his third goal of the game. Still a one goal game heading into the final quarter. In that final quarter, the Bucs would come out hot scoring two quick goals in the first three minutes and eventually hold CR to just one goal to hand Caesar Rodney their fist opening day loss in 8 years.
The Buccaneers will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Severna Park to take on the Falcons next Wednesday. The Riders looking to get in the win column when they host St. Peter and Paul on Monday.
