IRSD to restructure kindergarten services to deal accommodate growing student population

SELBYVILLE, Del. – Over at the Indian River School District, officials announced that they’ll be reconstructing  their kindergarten services for the upcoming school year. Starting in September, officials say kindergarten students that are currently attending the Georgetown Kindergarten Center will return to North Georgetown Elementary. School officials say the move will free up classroom space for Georgetown Middle School, which is expected to have a large increase in enrollment over the next two years. They add that the move was difficult but necessary to accommodate the growth.

“It was a move that was going to be too tight and too close to make the call to not do it this year. If we were to jump up to 330 kindergartners which is about average, to 340 then we would’ve had a really major issue of crowding,” said Indian River School District Superintendent Mark Steele.

Steele adds that beginning next year, 147 kindergarten students who live in the North Georgetown Elementary School area will attend school at that location. The remaining 141 students will attend Georgetown Elementary School.
