Inland Bays officials seeking volunteers for major planting projects
FRANKFORD, Del. – The Delaware Center for Inland Bays is looking for nearly 100 volunteers to help them with some major upcoming planting projects. Officials tell 47 for the next two weekends, they’ll be planting more than 5,000 trees in Sussex County. The planting projects will take place at the Assawoman Wildlife Area on Friday and Saturday, and at the Sussex County Landfill site on April 6th. They say they’ve been looking at high priority sites in the area that need to be reforested. Officials add that by planting these trees they’ll not only be helping to restore wildlife habitat, but they’ll also help to improve the water quality in local inland bays.
“Deer, turkeys, songbirds, they all need that type of habitat and it’s also really important for the water quality so you don’t really think about forests and water kind of be connected but they seaQuest are carbon out of our air and then they’re also reducing nutrient loads that go into our waters,” said Outreach and Education Coordinator Amy Barra.
Officials say that if you’re interested in volunteering for these projects you can simply call the center’s office at 302-226-8105 to sign up. They add that if you are coming to volunteer, make sure you bring gloves, shovels, and reusable water bottles.
