Hawks recover from cold start, run away with win over SC State
NORFOLK, VA- If you we’re at Scope Arena like Fred Batchelor was on Tuesday, the Maryland Eastern Shore women’s matchup on Wednesday afternoon looked like deja vu. Batchelor watched from the stands as the UMES’ men’s basketball team fell behind 9-0, en route to a 63-54 loss to South Carolina State. The women’s team fell behind 7-0, before performing tremendously in the next 34 minutes, going on to beat the Lady Bulldogs 54-37.
Adrienne Jones came off the bench to score a game-high 13 points on 5-7 shooting, including 3-5 from behind the three point line. Jones provided a spark the Lady Hawks needed, as did Chioma Nkpuechina. The reserve played 10 minutes and scored the Lady Hawks first points of the game at the 1:07 mark in the first quarter.
The Shore would outscore SCSU 32-6 from midway thru the second quarter to the end of the third, carrying a 46-22 lead into the fourth. Batchelor, the MEAC coach of the year got to empty his bench after 31 points from his reserve unit in a 57-34 win.
Maryland Eastern Shore will take on Thursday’s Coppin St./Bethune Cookman matchup on Friday afternoon at 2pm.
