Fourth graders learn how to stay safe in the water

SALISBURY, Md. – In Wicomico County, schools are putting water safety at the forefront of their curriculum this week giving kids a little break from the classroom setting.

On Wednesday, fourth graders at Prince Street Elementary students spent nearly two hours at the YMCA learning all about the safety of swimming by learning how to float, use a life saving ring and even navigate a canoe.

It’s an opportunity for all students even those who maybe can’t afford lessons to learn how to be safe in and around the water.

“We live on the peninsula so there’s water all around us and I think it’s really important that students have the opportunity to learn whether they’re in the water or near the water safety techniques that can help them with survival or to help someone else,” explains Jason Miller, Principal at Prince Street Elementary.

We’re told the YMCA has grant opportunities as well for low-income students, which allows them to come to the YMCA and get free swimming lessons in the summertime.
