Easton Police warning community of continuing phone scams

EASTON, Md. – The Easton Police Department is warning community members to be aware of continuing phone scams that are targeting Easton residents as well as other areas nationwide.

Officials say in the most recent round of scam calls, the caller spoofs a police agency number and identifies themselves as an employee of the Easton Police Department. The caller then tells the victim that they have an outstanding debt and must make immediate payment using a prepaid credit card or gift card to avoid having to surrender to authorities.

The Easton Police Department is reminding residents to never give their personal or financial information over the phone. Other tips to help avoid falling victim to this scam include being suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason, never wire money or provide debit/credit/Green Dot Money Pak card numbers to someone you do not know, and to try to gather names, the phone number, and location given to report to police if you do receive a scam call.
