Delaware lawmakers return to session and weigh in on hot topics

DOVER, Del. – Tuesday is the day that legislators head back to session and because local matters, 47 ABC wanted to break down what lawmakers plan on tackling in Dover.

Representative Steve Smyk says that no bill is more important than the other but there are some key topics that are coming their way.

One includes the popular vote initiative. Representative Ruth Briggs King says, “I do think it’s something that bears discussion because it’s so confusing to so many people that when they think they vote it’s the majority of votes and it’s not a majority vote that wins an election, it goes through electoral college that is a ‘winner take all’ kind of mentality if you will.”

There are also two bills in place for abortion. One would require that abortion clinics or agencies give the mother an opportunity to see an ultrasound. Another would help legislators and Delawareans understand the growth of a fetus. “They are looking at pain culpability and if the infant can feel pain that’s where they believe this bill describes when you should not abort the child,” Representative Smyk tells us.

Senator Brian Pettyjohn couldn’t get on camera but he also agrees with Representative Smyk and Representative Briggs King that these are key issues that are on their radar. Pettyjohn says another topic that could trigger conversation is the safe storage of firearms bill. “They’re looking at the amount of ammunition in each weapon, 3 or 5 to limit as a if it’s a universal gun that’s out there,” Representative Smyk states.

And efforts to raise the age for cigarette purchase from 18 to 21 is also bringing some heat. “To me if you’re 18 and you’re old enough to vote, you’re old enough to fight for your country and freedom then you are entitled to all the other rights that you’re entitled to. I think it’s time we really define, what are your rights when you’re 18,” Representative Briggs King tells us.

We’re told in the House they have many committee meetings and you can come anytime to voice your opinions on those bills. They said the more they hear from you, the better they can govern.
