Cape rallies down 5 for season-opening win
BERLIN, Md. – The quest for 11 straight Delaware state championships began for the Cape Henlopen girl’s lacrosse team tonight with a 9-8 come from behind win against Stephen Decatur.
Decatur got off to a strong start in the first two minutes of the game, tallying goals from Sarah Engle and Tori Mueller. The Seahawks continued to force the offense pressure with five more goals in the first. Cape found a pair of goals from Sawyer Walker, but still found themselves trailing 7-2 headed into the halftime break.
Alia Marshall came out firing in the second with two quick goals of her own and helped propel Cape to a 5-0 run to tie the game at 7-7. Engle gave Decatur the lead back after a penalty shot to make it 8-7. But, Meredith Lockwood knocked down the tying and game-winning goals to help the Vikings escape from Berlin with a win.
