Worcester County commissioners oppose offshore drilling and seismic airgun proposal

WORCESTER CO, Md. – Worcester County Commissioners in Ocean City are voicing their concerns about possible offshore drilling and seismic airgun blasting in the area.

Recently the commissioners sent a letter to the acting secretary of the interior asking him to reject the proposal for the Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing program.

In the letter commissioners say drilling for oil and gas off the coast will do more harm good, and they speculate it would hurt tourism in beach areas.

“We have a tremendous amount of tourism that we don’t want affected negatively by the sort of operation right off our coast, and we very much are in tandem with Ocean City,” said Worcester County Commissioner Chip Bertino.

There will be a discussion on the offshore drilling and seismic airgun blasting next Wednesday at the Dunes Manor hotel at 4 PM.
