UMES hosts exhibit for historic photos documenting early civil rights movement
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is partnering with the Maryland Historical Society to present an exhibit of photos taken throughout the state during the early civil rights movement.
The exhibit is a collection of Paul Henderson photos that document the civil rights movement for the Afro-American newspaper in Baltimore. Henderson was one of the first photo-journalists for the Afro-American.
Images and newspaper articles from that time also detail events taking place here on the eastern shore.
The mission of this partnership is to spread these images across the state while preserve Maryland’s history.
“I like to say that every picture has a unique story to it. Some of them have really amazing stories behind them. So they’re just amazing historical documents, and many of them are very visually pleasing,” said Joe Tropea, the curator of films and photographs for the Maryland Historical Society.
This historic collection is on display at the Moseley Gallery until March 13.
