Town of Hurlock unveils new plan to bring community center to area
HURLOCK, Md. – It’s a dream community leaders, residents, and town officials have been chasing for years. To have a community center of their own, and provide a positive and safe environment for the youth living in Hurlock to go to.
“When you have a community center, you have individuals that are there just to be there, that are not even related to you to say I care about you, I don’t want to see you getting in trouble,” said neighborhood relations manager for the city of Salisbury, Kevin Lindsay.
Year, after year, after year, town officials and community members tried to bring their vision to life. But they’ve yet too be successful.
“When I was coming they were trying to get a youth center and I’m in my 50s it’s been a long time, so it’s been a long time coming,” said longtime resident Cederick Turner.
But this go round, city officials say they’re confident that their newest plan to bring a community center to the town will finally come true.
“We’ve got a determined mayor and council that’s willing to work together,” said Turner.
This year, Hurlock’s mayor and town council agreed on a new idea to pursue. Build a new facility to move the town’s fire department into, and use the old building, to create the community center.
“It already has bays that could be used as basketball courts and other activities, it has offices, it has classrooms, and it has a cafeteria as well as a certified kitchen,” said Hurlock county council member, Reverand Charles Cephas.
On Tuesday night, town officials met with members of the USDA to learn how to apply for and receive direct loans and grants to help put their plan in motion.
And they believe this is the year, all their hard work will finally pay off.
“This is the time, the window of opportunity is now and we’re going to open the window,” said Cephas.
Hurlock officials say they’ll continue to hold more planning sessions for the proposed community center over the next couple of months. The next meeting is set for Thursday, March 14th at 6PM at the Greater Full Gospel Church of God.
