Georgetown homeless ordinance causing controversy
GEORGETOWN, Del. – In Sussex County, advocates for the homeless population are expressing concerns over a new law in Georgetown they feel is unconstitutional.
The new law says setting up camp or using the downtown area for personal storage reasons can pose public health and safety threats.
Anyone who violates this rule could face a fine, amount decided on case-by-case basis.
We’re told the law went into effect back in December, but those with the Shepherd’s Office say the law violates rights of homeless people in the area.
Donations Coordinator, Joseph Kennedy said, “It’s terrible because come middle of March the winter homeless shelters close. They have no where to go and now that can’t even set up a tent. You can’t criminalize a person with no where to go.”
The Shepherd’s office tells us they have yet to decide when they will go approach city hall with their complaints.
