Prince Street Elementary hosts first-ever House Celebration
SALISBURY, Md. – On Thursday, it was a Hogwarts-style celebration over at Prince Street Elementary.
The school put on its very first House Celebration.
If you’re unfamiliar with Harry Potter, students are sorted into houses and earn points based on good behavior, hoping to be named the best house of the year.
Earlier this year, Prince Street sorted kids into five houses of its own each standing for a virtue that students should embody.
Houses like Jabari standing for integrity.
Thursday teachers selected students of exemplary behavior to spin a wheel to earn even more points for their respective houses.
Principal Jason Miller tells us the system was designed to bring students closer together in a fun way and provide incentives for academic success.
Principal Jason Miller said, “We’ve seen a huge change within the culture of our school because we feel like the kids belong to something and we’ve really tried to increase that student engagement in our classrooms.”
Principal Miller tells us that since implementing the new system, office referrals have dropped significantly.
To put that in perspective, this time last year they had 172 referrals and this year they’ve only had 21.
For all our Harry Potter fans, it sounds like a sorting hat put to good use.
