Police concerns arise over new Del. criminal justice reform initiatives
DELAWARE – Local Law enforcement agencies are speaking out after Delaware’s Attorney General Kathy Jennings rolled out new policies when it comes to prosecution of marijuana possession crimes.
In hopes of decreasing the state’s prison population Jennings is encouraging law enforcement agencies to consider civil citations for offenders with less than 175 grams of marijuana.
A move local law enforcement says could be difficult to make.
“In the end it’s kind of going to be frustrating on us, you know, because we are making these arrests and they’re going to go nowhere in the end. Starting out with just a small amount of marijuana which they may not prosecute could lead to larger and bigger things,” explains Sr. Cpl. Eric Chambers of the Seaford Police Dept.
Chambers says the guidelines won’t chance how they police their area.
