Local farmers gather for inaugural Delmarva Farmers Union Convention
POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – Local farmers got together in Pocomoke Saturday afternoon for the inaugural Delmarva Farmers Union Convention.
The Delmarva Farmers Union was established a year ago to build up a robust food system on the peninsula.
Their goal was to bring farmers together to address issues that are hurting the local agriculture industry.
Issues like access to good food markets, creating opportunities for new farmers, and regulations that hinder sales across state lines.
“A lot of small farms are kind of operating in kind of isolation, so they can commune with their fellow farmers. There’s a lot of peer-to-peer networking, and education,” said board member Lisa Garfield.
Soon this organization will begin a program to certify farms restaurants and other organizations as selling locally grown items.
