Lawmakers looking to redefine gun carrying requirements

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Included in Monday’s hearing schedule was House Bill 342.

It’s a bill that would clear up who has the right to carry a firearm.

To clear that up, lawmakers are focusing on self defense as a viable reason to carry.

We spoke with Delegate Johnny Mautz who tells us he believes having a concealed weapon for this reason is not only a right — but a necessity.

He said, “If you are concerned that you are in danger or if need a gun to be safe, it takes weeks to get a conceal and carry permit and it’s very unlikely you’re going to get that permit. People that want to be safe should have the ability to get a gun to protect themselves.”

The bill would allow those who meet necessary requirements to own a firearm to obtain this license within quote “a reasonable amount of time,” something Marylanders have experienced challenges with in the past, Mautz tells us.

After Monday’s hearing, we’re told if passed House 342 could go into effect as early at October of 2019.
