Keeping Worcester High School’s legacy alive

NEWARK, Md. –  Worcester High School alumni made their way to the Worcester County Board of Education building on Tuesday to celebrate and relive their past.

The building, which used to be their high school, is now a place where locals can learn about it’s history.

That’s important because Worcester High School was the county’s only high school for for African Americans from 1953 until it closed in 1970.

“It’s bringing back memories of yester-year. Those of us that are still alive and here today came here today to support the Board of Education for taking the time out to preserve a place that we once called home for education,” explains James Purnell, Class of 1955.

We’re told that saving this building is a major priority for those who went to Worcester High.
