Infrastructure tax for Del Tech in trouble
GEORGETOWN, Del. – In Sussex County, one piece of legislation is gaining a lot of attention among local residents because it could create a statewide property tax.
Senate Bill 50 would establish the Community College Infrastructure Fund, a fund that would go directly towards Delaware Technical Community College campuses across the state.
The goal of the bill is to get much needed money to keep the college campuses up to date, but the taxpayers aren’t too happy that the money could be coming out of their pockets.
“It’s my understanding that the bill really has slowed down and the college is taking another look at other options we can be helpful in the general assembly in regards to infrastructure without the property tax which I think is going to ease a lot of the concern that people and legislators have,” explains Sen. Ernie Lopez.
Sen. Lopez says he along with other legislators are big supporters of Del Tech, the jobs it creates and economic value it brings. But he also says that they need to be thoughtful in the decision on how to help the institution.
