House fire in Milford results in $70k in damages

MILFORD, Del. – The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office says a house fire in Milford late Thursday night resulted in $70,000 in damages.

The fire was reported at a home in the 4300 block of McColley Road, just off of Cedar Beach Road, shortly before 11:30 PM. The Carlisle Fire Company responded to the call and on arrival, immediately requested assistance from other nearby fire companies.

It took four fire companies approximately one hour and 15 minutes to control the fire. We’re told the homeowner was able to escape and was treated at Bayhealth Sussex Campus for first degree burns to his hands and face. Two firefighters were also treated for minor injuries and later released.

The investigation conducted by the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s Office concluded that the fire began on the first floor of the two story home, and began as a result of a failure in an operating liquid fueled space heater.

The home’s occupants are currently receiving assistance from the Red Cross of Delmarva.
